MEET THE 2025 LEADERSHIP TRAILBLAZER WINNER EMILY LEWIS, DEPUTY COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR, CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FLORIDA

The League caught up with the 2025 Trailblazer Winner, Emily Lewis, Deputy County Administrator, Charlotte County, Florida to talk about being named the 2025 Leadership Trailblazer, books she recommends, and advice to her younger self.

Q: Congratulations on being named the 2025 Leadership Trailblazer Award Winner. What does the award mean to you?
Being named the 2025 Leadership Trailblazer Award Winner is truly an honor of a lifetime. This recognition represents far more than an individual achievement—it reflects the collective journey, mentorship, and shared commitment to leadership that so many women have poured into me and alongside me over the years. I am deeply grateful and humbled to be acknowledged among so many inspiring leaders who are paving the way for future generations.

Q: What do you attribute to the success of the women's programming you've been a part of in Florida?
The success of the Florida Women Leading Government programming is a direct result of the hard work, tenacity, and passion of the remarkable group of women who came together to form the organization. Their unwavering dedication to the mission—developing and empowering future women leaders in our state—created a strong foundation rooted in collaboration, mentorship, and purpose. It has always been about lifting one another up and creating meaningful opportunities for growth and connection.

2024 Trailblazer Stephanie Lucash presented 2025 Trailblazer, Emily Lewis her award in Tampa, Florida.

Q: What do you think is needed or needs to change for more women to become city/county managers?
Confidence is key. In today's world, there should be no barriers preventing women from stepping into city and county manager roles. Women must believe in their readiness, their leadership abilities, and their right to lead. At the same time, organizations must continue fostering inclusive cultures that recognize talent, value diverse perspectives, and actively support women as they advance into executive leadership positions.

Q: What are three books you recommend everyone read and why?
I recommend books that encourage self-awareness, leadership growth, and perspective.

  • Dare to Lead by Brené Brown, for its powerful message on courage, vulnerability, and authentic leadership.
  • The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, for its simple yet profound guidance on personal integrity and mindset.
  • Atomic Habits by James Clear, for its practical insights on how small, consistent changes can lead to lasting success both personally and professionally.

Q: What do you like to do for fun or interests outside of work and your career?
Outside of work, I enjoy activities that allow me to slow down, create, and reconnect. Beekeeping has taught me patience and respect for nature, while soap making and pottery give me a creative outlet. I also love reading—it's both a source of relaxation and continual learning.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
I would remind my younger self not to sweat the small stuff, to listen with the intent to understand rather than to be understood, and above all, to be authentic. Staying true to who you are, leading with integrity, and trusting the journey make all the difference over time.
